Low Carb Intelligence vs. Low Carb Stupidity

Remember that movie with Jim Carey, "Dumb and Dumber?" And remember the sequel to that movie, "Dumb and Dumberer?" Well, the low carb mania that is sweeping the globe today has reached a level beyond dumberer... It's more like dumberererer (try to say that five times real fast)

There is an epidemic of "low carb stupidity" running rampant among millions of people throughout the world today - and fast food restaurants, food product manufacturers, supplement companies, and weight loss programs are capitalizing on it in a big way!

\"low Carb Protein\"

The low carb diet is not inherently "stupid," however. It can be quite beneficial within certain parameters and under the right circumstances. The problem is that many practitioners are uninformed, misinformed, or simply lack the common sense and intuitive bodily wisdom to utilize the low carb approach intelligently.

Low Carb Intelligence vs. Low Carb Stupidity

Many low-carbers don't even know why they are on a low carb diet, they're just following the followers (Not intelligent!) Doing what everyone else is doing is always one of the surest, straightest routes to arrive at mediocrity! If you want to be a success, your chances are far greater if you look at what the masses are doing and do the exact opposite!

Fortunately, there is such a thing as "low carb intelligence." Hopefully, by reading my brief rant, you will increase your carb IQ, and soon join the ranks of the extraordinarily fit, lean and healthy "carbo geniuses!"

Low carb stupidity #1

Selecting your beer or liquor carefully to make sure you have the brand with the fewest grams of carbs.

Low carb intelligence

Avoiding alcohol if you're trying to lose body fat. Drinking only in moderation if you're trying to maintain your weight and be healthy.

Low carb stupidity #2

Believing any of the following: Low carbs diets are the only way to lose fat, low carb diets are the best way to lose fat, no one should ever eat a high carb diet, high carbs always make you fat, starches and grains make everyone sick and unhealthy.

Low carb intelligence

Adjusting your approach according to your health status, your goals and your body type, not according to generalizations preached by dogmatic diet "gurus."

Low carb stupidity #3

Going on the Atkins diet (or any other very low carb/ketogenic diet) with absolutely no idea why you're doing it or how the diet works (going on it because "everybody" is doing it and because you see it advertised everywhere.)

Low carb intelligence

Studying the physiology and biochemistry of the low carb diet and completely understanding all the pros and cons. Then making an informed decision whether to restrict carbs based on your own personal goals, needs and heath status.

Low carb stupidity #4

Thinking that very low carb (ketogenic) dieting is a maintainable "lifestyle."

Low carb intelligence

Understanding that reasonable (moderate) restriction of carbs can be a helpful short term strategy for fat loss, a good way to reach a peak, a legitimate method to control appetite, and an effective way for some people to control insulin. But also understanding that a balanced diet of natural foods is probably the most suitable of all the diets for health, lifelong maintenance and weight control.

Low carb stupidity #5

Believing calories don't count if you just cut out your carbs (or not counting calories because it's "too much work.")

Low carb intelligence

Knowing that fat loss always did and always will boil down to calories in vs. calories out. Taking the time and effort to crunch your numbers (at least once), typing up your menu on a spreadsheet, keeping a diary, and/or using nutrition tracking software.

Low carb stupidity #6

Staying on a low carb diet that has stopped working (or never worked in the first place).

Low carb intelligence

Adjusting your diet according to your results; understanding that a common definition of insanity (and/or stupidity) is to continue to do the same things over and over again, while expecting a different result.

Low carb stupidity#7

Believing that you don't need exercise because all you need to do is cut carbs.

Low carb intelligence

Knowing that dieting is the worst way to lose fat and that exercise is the best way to lose fat (Burn The Fat, don't starve the fat).

Low carb stupidity #8

Using the argument; "There's no such thing as an essential carbohydrate" as justification for low carb dieting.

Low carb intelligence

Realizing that textbook definitions of "essential" can be taken out of context to promote a fad diet and that just because there's technically no "essential" carbohydrates (as there are essential amino acids and fatty acids) doesn't mean carbohydrates aren't "essential" in other respects.

Low carb stupidity #9

Using the argument, "You have to eat fat to lose fat" as justification for a high fat, low carb diet, without explaining it or putting it in context (exactly how much fat and what kind of fat?)

Low carb intelligence

Understanding the importance of essential and omega three fats (the good fats), but not taking any single nutritional principle to an extreme (such as, "If a little fat is good for you then a lot is even better.")

Low carb stupidity #10

Saying, "All carbs are bad" or "All carbs are fattening."

Low carb intelligence

Avoiding generalizations, and instead, having multiple distinctions about carbohydrates (and other foods) so you can make better choices. For example:

Low GI vs. high GI carbs

Simple vs. complex carbs

Starchy vs. fibrous carbs

Natural vs. refined carbs

High calorie density vs. low calorie density carbs

Low carb stupidity #11

Not clarifying your definition of low carbs.

Low carb intelligence

Realizing that there are "very low" carb diets, "low" carb diets, and "moderate" carb diets and that you cant lump them all together. (Some people consider The Zone Diet, at 40% of calories from carbs, a low carb diet, others consider 40% carbs quite high).

Low carb stupidity #12

Believing that carrots are fattening because they're high on the glycemic index and because a popular fad diet book says so.

Low carb intelligence

Have we lost all vestiges of common sense? With an average carrot clocking in at 31 calories and 7.3 grams of carbs, do you really think that this orange-colored, nutrient-dense, low-calorie, all-natural, straight-out-of-the-ground root vegetable is going to make you fat? (if so, you are in "carbohydrate kindergarten.")

Low carb stupidity... Lucky #13

Eating lots of processed and packaged low carb foods (including those protein "candy bars")... and thinking you're "being good" and "following your diet."

Low carb intelligence

Realizing that natural, unrefined foods are one of the keys to lifelong weight control and that anything man made and refined is NOT an ideal "diet" food - including the highly processed low carb foods that are all the rage this year. (Doesn't this bandwagon reek of the late 80's and early 90's "no fat" craze, when all those "fat free" foods were being passed off as healthy diet food, but were really highly processed and full of pure sugar?)

--End of Stupidities--

Forgive me for the obvious dashes of sarcasm, but sometimes I just can't help myself and I end up going into "rant mode"... I think the last time this happened was in my newsletter almost a year ago... that was the issue where I wrote about the ad for the candy bar that increases your bench press by 50 pounds? Yeah... I heard those bars are especially effective when you combine them with low carb potato chips (weren't those low fat potato chips a few years ago??? Oh nevermind... it's all soooo confusing!)

How To Properly Diet For A Bodybuilding Contest

Although you may NOT ever compete, most will find this helpful and take some information from it and incorporate it into your own diet when you decide to cut down for whatever reason.

This diet isn't specifically designed for anyone in particular; this isn't even the diet that I follow, but a variation of it. Its simply a skeletal structure of a bodybuilding diet.

\"low Carb Protein\"

NOTE: This is for the natural competitor

How To Properly Diet For A Bodybuilding Contest

Depending on your body fat percentage and your body type you generally want to give yourself about 10-15 weeks out to start your diet. I have been very blessed and only have to diet roughly 10 weeks out. Its not rare to see some competitors start dieting as far as 22 weeks out from a show, to help reserve muscle. Also a note on the sodium load, its a risky endeavor but I have found it to be a very beneficial tool if used properly, however I would NOT recommend a sodium load on your first couple shows.

For the sake of argument we'll do a 12 week diet.

Weeks 12-10
You want to start your diet by eliminating all kinds of crappy foods and only take in clean foods, such as beef, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, milk, protein shakes, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruit, vegetables, etc. Your water intake should also be increased to a gallon to gallon/half.

Cardio work should be started gradually, roughly about 20 minutes 3 times a week. Targeted heart rate should be between 150-170BPM for 20 minutes. Not jump on the bike for 20 minutes and realize your HR was only in the targeted zone for 11 minutes. Make sure its 20 minutes.

Supplementation: A good assistance in fat loss, as everyone knows is ECA stack or a good weight loss supplement on the market. I benefited nicely from the ephedra or Hydroxycut. I don't believe in appetite suppressants as you should be eating and anything that is going to curb your appetite is no good. Especially for a critical diet like this. So, a 200mg of caffeine and 25mg of Ephedrine and 300mg of aspirin 3-4 times a day on empty stomach is recommended.

Week 9

Diet is starting to get a little tighter and you're now starting to play around with your ratio's c/p/f. A typical day will look something like this:

-Oatmeal (25-35 grams of carbs)

-Zero -low carb protein shake (40 grams)

-5 egg whites or can of tuna (I hate tuna so I have eggs)

-Any veggie, salad, broccoli, carrots, etc.

-2 chicken breasts

-1 plain baked potato

-Protein shake (40 grams) low carb

-Pork, steak, chicken, beef, etc

-Veggies and/or rice (brown)

-Casein whey protein

Cardio: It's kicked up to 30 minutes 4 times a week and its done before breakfast. Target HR is the same as it was before.

Supplementation: same

Week 8-6: Tightening the diet

Diet: Start eliminating most of the starches. Start taking in more veggies. You are now taking in more lean meats, fish, etc.

Cardio: Is kicked up to 6 times a week for 30 minutes before breakfast or after workout.

Supplementation is same

You should definitely start seeing more definition and can start evaluating your diet based on how you look. If you're holding too much water, start upping the water and you may even want to start sodium loading at this point. Its still far enough out from a show to play around with sodium in your diet. If the carbs are too high or your body isn't burning up the carbs as you thought, start cutting the carbs a little more.

Week 5-4
What are some of the better types of carbs for me to eat? What Low GI and High GI? Well, the low GI carbs have nearly zero effect on your blood sugars. Foods like broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, etc will have low GI levels. For the high GI, It is more of an impact on your blood sugars obviously. I am not certain but there is a myth that the low and high GI foods had to do with digestion. I think that is false. Anyways any other foods high in GI are all that I had listed.

Diet: As strict as its going to get from here on out. Carbs are extremely low. I usually target about 20 per meal with about 6 meals in a day. Protein is still kept high about 1.5 for 1lb of BW. Fats are now at an all time low of 20-30 a day. How does one get only 20-30 grams of fats in a day. Well, if you're monitoring your meats, fish, etc and making sure they are nearly fat free you can control your fat intake by eating nuts (polyunsaturated); almonds are a fan favorite...about 5 or 6 almonds a meal should do the trick.

Different types of fats FYI:

Saturated fats: found primarily in foods coming from animals and some veggies as well, those are saturated veggie fats that are in bakery goods and nondairy milk or cream products. When you're doing your shopping you can see the saturated fats that are solid in room temp. This is the most harmful fat to any diet

Polyunsaturated Fats - these are the fats you want to take in for a contest. They are found in almonds, fish, and various oils.

Monounsaturated - pretty much the same as the poly as they both reduce cholesterol levels but they aren't as effective as the poly's. This fat is found in olives, cashews, avocado and other various oils that stem from plants.

Trans Fats - This is the veggie want be butter shit they use to extend the life of a shelved food, these increase cholesterol levels.

Fats are important in a diet, during a critical diet such as this they help to lube the joints during resistance training. You're going to find a lot of achy bones and ligaments and soreness you're not used to because of this diet. I know I did. So the fats help with the joints

Cardio: is now everyday for 30 minutes before breakfast or after workout.

Posing is also 3-4 times a week but you guys don't need to do that.

Supplementation: You want to start taking in potassium to prevent the cramping. Also along with your multi you should have more C and B6 as well. Glutamine is upped from 10 grams a day to 15-20.

Week 3-2

Diet: Increased sodium, put it on everything...Even drop a little in your protein shake. Load load load. Water should be 1.5-2 gallons. Carbs are now under 100 a day, mostly taken in the morning and protein is still 1.5 to a pound. Fats are kept at 20-30.

Cardio is now 40 minutes 7 days a week.

Workout: should be light and reps should be high (10-15)

Posing: 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes

Supplementation: same

Day 14-7

Diet: Carbs are now between 50-80. Protein is the same and water is 2 gallons a day. Sodium is still loading. Fats 20-30 grams

Cardio: same

Supplementation: potassium, calcium, multi, C, B6, ECA, milk thistle.

Day 7-4

Carbs are extremely low, preparing for the carb load the last 72 hours. Sodium is now cut out completely and water is increased to 2.5 gallons.

Cardio is the same:

Workout: very light, minimal. Your energy should be so low that you're doing 2 sets per isolated movement. No compound movements concentrate on pulling out muscles. Start to control the muscle...your primary workout should be posing anyways and controlling each muscle.

Supplementation: POTASSIUM! POTASSIUM! POTASSIUM! It's high because the cramping is a SOB!

Day 3-1

Diet: 400-500 grams of Carbs, Clean clean clean. Rice, potato, rice cakes, etc. I eat baby food because of the vit. and potassium in them and I can eat them all day long. Water is cut completely. Fats are same, protein is same..maybe drop it depending on how you're feeling.

Stay away from the gym

pose pose pose pose.

Supplementation: Diuretics, anything and everything. Get that water out of you!!!

Day of Show:

Moderate carbs, go on feeling. If you need energy for the pre-judge then eat some chocolate or rice cakes...sip some pedialyte to prevent complete dehydration and cramping.

For a first time competitor; the entire battle is against yourself. We all want to win the show or place decently, first overcome the battle of getting to know what your body is all about and how it can respond positively to a diet such as this first.

Again, most of you don't have the intentions of competing, however maybe some have thought about it but never knew how to properly prepare. I hope that this will not only encourage you but at least help you diet for anything else. Keep in mind that this is a strict bodybuilding diet (although some are A LOT stricter) and you can take little info from here to construct a diet suitable for your own goals.

High Protein Low Carb Foods - Quick Tips And Warnings

Most people start a diet of high protein low carb foods by eating lots of poultry and meat then avoiding foods like rice, potatoes, bread and noodles. If you're considering this type of diet as well, here are other things you should know.

If you want to use this diet to lose weight, make sure that you inform your physician about it first. He or a recommended nutritionist will then provide you with a sample food plan identifying foods that you can and can't eat as well how much of each food group you're allowed to consume each day.

\"low Carb\"

Eating too much high protein low carb foods might cause you to suffer from instant mood changes. If you're already moody before even taking this diet, you might want to reconsider dieting using this option.

High Protein Low Carb Foods - Quick Tips And Warnings

Many people advocate the virtual opposite of eating high protein low carb foods. These people point out studies which reveal how diets possessing high carbs allow people to enjoy general improvement of their moods.

Be aware that even authorities like the American Heart Association and the government of the United States have guidelines regarding diets and which a high protein low carb diet violates.

With this type of diet, you should try to moderate your lifestyle because the absence of carbohydrates in your body will immediately lead to an absence of energy. Thus, you'll find yourself more easily tired and stressed. Granted, you're going to lose weight more quickly but your exhaustion might prevent you from enjoying your trimmer and healthier figure.

Eating lots of protein and almost zero carbohydrates can also slow down your thinking process. If mental agility is a must in your job, you'll definitely find this diet disadvantageous to your occupation.

There's such a thing as good protein and bad protein. So be careful then about which foods you're eating because it might contain the bad protein. Bad protein foods are disastrous to your diet!

The best source of good protein foods is seafood and fish. Better yet, these foods have low fat content as well, further preventing any chances for you to gain weight.

To end this with a positive note, you should know that amidst all those warnings, there are however two great benefits that you'll enjoy with high protein low carb foods. Firstly, you get to control your weight more easily and secondly, if you want to buff up a little, protein can help you build your muscles.

No-Bake Low Carb Chocolate Cheesecake Recipe

1 8oz. package of Philadelphia cream cheese

1 1oz. square of Bakers' brand baking chocolate

1 tbsp. Vanilla extract

1 tbsp. butter or margarine

1 cup of Splenda (I wouldn't recommend any other artificial sweetener for this)

Blend softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, and 3/4 of the Splenda until smooth. Melt the square of chocolate in the microwave for 1 minute and add margarine and 1/4 of the Splenda into the chocolate. Slowly beat in the chocolate mixture into the cream cheese. Place the cheesecake mixture into a bowl and place in the fridge for an hour to set.

Being on a low GI diet is beneficial, especially if you are trying to lose weight. Low GI foods are usually more filling than high GI foods, so this means that you can feel fuller for much longer, which will stop you from snacking in between meals.

It is important to understand how GI and your appetite works, following are some examples of this:

* Low GI foods will be more filling because they tend to last longer in your body

* High GI foods will cause you to become hungry sooner because your blood sugar levels fall and stimulates your responses

* Adrenalin and cortisol known as stress hormones are released when your sugar levels react after consuming a high GI food, these will both help to stimulate your appetite

* Low GI foods are more satisfying because they are not energy dense like high GI foods

Bodybuilding and Toning Sessions For Beginners

The most common questions I am asked from skinny guys that are trying to bulk up and develop some muscle tone, is where they should start. Most have the drive and enthusiasm but are unsure of a weight and exercise routine to adopt that will bring success. This simple and easy to follow outline is a brilliant one for those just starting out or for those just simply wanting to add some weight training to their already existing program. I have had low impact sportspeople such as golfers right through to high impact sportspeople adopt this easy to manage routine and reap the rewards.

Always start with an activity that increases heart rate and gets the blood pumping through the body. You can simply do some star jumps or jogging on the spot or use a stationary bike or treadmill for this purpose. These apparatus can also be used on the off days from your weight training if you have the time. Make sure you drink water or a sports drink 15 minutes before you begin and it is imperative that you continue to hydrate during the session. For every 1% body weight lost due to fluid loss through sweating, will cause a 5% decrease in performance. So keep drinking, it will help you get more out of your session!

\"low Carb Protein\"

Not everyone has hours to spend on an exercise program and has the time to complete a lengthy daily routine. However, I would recommend that you go through the process outlined at least 2 to 3 times a week. This program can also be adapted in accordance with the time that you have available to you. It is suitable for both men and women and you will soon discover the appropriate weight loading according to your strength and development. In fact, you will be amazed at your ability to cope with an increase in weight a few weeks after you commence. However, start with light weights which will allow you to adopt the correct techniques.

Bodybuilding and Toning Sessions For Beginners

Starting with the larger muscle groups has always been a common format and one that I would advise. Remember the order; warm up, stretch, chest exercises, shoulders, legs, biceps and triceps. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps for every activity mentioned with a weight that allows you to complete the 10 reps without total exhaustion. Also stretching the specific muscle group you are working on between sets will increase growth as you address the tissue that has been under load. Give yourself about 1 minute rest in between sets. Keep this timing consistent, as well as your routine for the first few weeks so you can better judge your growth and development. I suggest having a training partner to encourage and spot for you for safety reasons.

Ideally you will require some warm up equipment, a weight bench, a long barbell with a variety of weight discs that can be easily changed and at least 2 small dumbells for some one handed lifting exercises and a large exercise ball for seated activities. All of this equipment can be purchased new from most large retail stores or can be found incredibly cheaply at garage sales or in the second hand for sale section of the local newspaper. Try eBay and other online auctions for bargain prices. Larger machines can be inflexible, hard to store and require lots of space. However, if you have the room or already have one they will definitely do the job.

Chest. Start with bench presses using a flat bench, preferably using a spotter to assist you. Follow with flys. Lay flat on the bench with small dumbells in each hand. Raise each above your chest then allow them simultaneously to be lowered to the side level with your chest and below the level of the bench in a wide clapping style motion. Keep the elbow slightly bent. Your grip should not be overly tight. Follow with seated flys. Sit on the exercise ball, keep back straight and lean toward the floor in front of you. Get a dumbell in each hand and at the same time lift them to the side stretching your chest muscles. Don't jerk the body but rather lift with slightly bent elbows.

Shoulders. Straddle the bench with a longer barbell in your hands. Lift to just below the chin, this is your starting point. Lift the bar past your face and all the way until arms are stretched, then lower to starting point. Next set is the same but done behind the neck. Follow by seated one hand lifts with dumbells from the shoulder, past the ear and all the way to locking point above your head. Lift both at the same time. Next stand with dumbells at your side and lift out in a flapping motion with elbows slightly bent. Lift and lower slowly. Do 3 sets of each exercise. 10 reps each set.

Legs. If you have a stationary bike, start with 1 minute steady pedalling. The sprint for 10 seconds, slow for 10 seconds. Continue this for 2 minutes. Follow with 3 sets of leg raises. If you have a bench with leg raise bar, place the appropriate weights on and complete 3 sets. One facing up and one facing down to work the quads and the hamstrings. Finish with squats. In the first week or so use no weights then progress to holding a weight disc across your chest. After a few weeks, begin to use a barbell resting on your shoulders and gradually increase the weight to a comfortable level. Overloading the bar is not wise and will place unnecessary pressure on your knees. If joint pain is a problem to you I would suggest a supplement containing glucosamine and chondroitin. Arthritis sufferers and those that have played a lot of sport swear by it.

Biceps. Start with a longer barbell in a standing position and hold with palms facing forward and bar resting on thighs. Curl the bar up to the chest holding the upper arm by your side and moving the lower arm upward in an arc like shape. Lower down to thighs. Next use single hand dumbells in the same format. You may lift both together or use an alternate action. Try not to swing the down to lift, use the arms.Next set is also using dumbells. Hold them by the side with palms facing in toward the leg so the end of the dumbell is facing straight ahead. Lift together using the same action as previously.

Triceps. Commence with sitting on the floor and placing your hands to the rear of you a little wider than shoulder width and with the fingers pointing forward. Lift your bottom off the ground and bend legs with feet flat. Lower and raise your body using your arms bending and straightening. Next sit on an exercise ball with a dumbell in each hand and lean forward. Move the upper arm to the rear of you and parallel to the ground. Using the lower part of the arm lift the dumbell like a pendulum toward the rear and then lower to perpendicular position. Lift simultaneously. Can also add variety by standing and leaning over the bench and placing 1 knee on the bench. Work 1 arm at a time using the same method outlined above.

After exercise is absolutely crucial and the key that many neglect. What you do after a workout can significantly enhance what you have just done or if you do nothing, can lessen the effectiveness. Regardless of the intensity of the session, your muscles cells will suffer some damage, as this is one aspect that causes growth and toning. Repair, recovery and growth can be sped up remarkably by taking a protein shake within 30-40 minutes after the session. Low fat and low carb shakes are fantastic if you don't want to build muscle mass but are simply looking for better tone, shape and reducing fat. L Carnitine will assist fat reduction as well. If bulking up is what you want, then a protein shake that is higher in carbs, such as an xtreme mass gainer will do a super job. Adding creatine to the mix will lift the effect even more. Don't waste your workout. The right supplement is vital.

Low Carb Snacks That Kids And Adults Will Love

It's the highlight of any school day - recess. This is applicable to any grade-schooler. But as parents, we pretty much have to put healthy and low-carb snacks in our children's lunch boxes. Bear in mind that when a kid gains weight at such a young age, he will have a difficult time shedding the excess pounds when he gets older.

Cakes, candied cereals, ice cream, flavored popcorn, cookies, candies, muffins and all kinds of pastries may seem so appealing. I bet your mouth is watering simply by reading that passage. Sure these are low in fat, but take note, these are relatively high in calories.

\"low Carb\"

But there is a way for us to satisfy our sweet tooth craving the Low Carb Way. First of all, you must have the control to not reach in for the chips and crackers in between meals, or else you're engaging in a low-carb diet will turn out to be completely pointless.

Low Carb Snacks That Kids And Adults Will Love

A low carb snack must ideally have healthy fat, protein and fiber. If you are having eggs or jerky, you might as well have vegetables with it.

Here's a rundown of low-carb snacks you can consider munching on:

- Celery with tuna salad

- Celery with peanut butter

- Hard boiled eggs

- Pickles and cheddar cheese

- Berries and cottage cheese

- Nuts. Best serve when kept in freezer.

- Sunflower seeds

- Pumpkin seeds

- Jerky like turkey or beef. Find the low-sugar variety

- Shakes. Make sure it's low carb though

- Cheese sticks

- Sugar free jello

- Apple slices

- Sugar free yogurt flavored with berries

- Lettuce roll ups on luncheon meat, tuna, or egg salad

- Lettuce dipped in bean dip, spinach dip or other low carb dip

- Ricotta cheese with nuts, fruit or seeds

- Mushroom and cheese spread

- Low carb snack bars

Take note though that just because these are low-carbohydrate, these snacks are healthy. It may be popular and has already dominated the snack food companies and market but as a consumer, you must still be careful when choosing the low-carb snacks you will provide yourself and your family.

First off, low carb snack bars. There are tons of snack bars to choose from in the grocery. Not all of them provide good nutrition. Some low carb snack bars are there to maintain phases of low carb diets because they still contain calories. The sugar they have contain alcohol. Alcohol sugars in low carb snack bars will be difficult to digest and result to gas.

If you choose to settle for low-carb cookie mixes, then the best we can recommend are the low-carb chocolate chip cookies mix and the low-carb peanut butter cookies mix. Simply because, peanut butter is already an example of low-carb snack and chocolate chip cookies' sugar content is balanced out with the help of the eggs and butter (light) mix.

If you would like to try out low carb shakes, make sure to read the labels so you will have an idea of the nutritional content. Double check if the shake mix are low on glycemic.

As pointed out by Dr. Robert Atkins in his Atkins diet, the cause of weight gain is "stodgy" food like bread and potatoes. More often than not, dieters trying out the low-carb diet often complain that they miss eating bread. If it is any consolation, there are some low carb breads out there in the market. These low carb breads have added soy flour to the mix.

But that does not mean that this bread is wheat free. They are also not gluten free. So the best way for you to achieve success in the low-carb diet is to not eat bread entirely. Yeah, you will miss it but it is for the best.

Now, if you feel that you have been very good in sticking with your low-carb diet and deserve to have a binge day once in a while, you can do so. Does pizza sound good? Well, glad to inform you that there are low-carb crust pizza with healthy toppings that is most suitable for the low-carb dieter. Fresh marinara on pizza sauce added with goat cheese, basil, vegetables and tomatoes are enough for a dieter's mouth to water.

Being on a low-carb diet does not mean that you will repress yourself, it only means you have to regulate what you put in your mouth.

List of Low Carb Foods for Weight Loss

Hello there, I have compiled a list of low carb foods and some good substitutes for the higher carb foods in your diet. Start incorporating these foods into your diet and jump start your body's fat burning power.

Fruit - Start eating low sugar fruit. The best choices are small amounts of lemon and lime, rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries. These fruits contain the lowest amount of sugar than any others. Other fruits that contain slightly higher amounts of sugar but are still good choices include cantaloupes, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, papaya, casaba melon, watermelon, strawberries, honeydew melons, apples, guavas, apricots, and grapefruit. Fruits that are fairly high in sugar include pineapple, plums, oranges, kiwifruit, and pears. Fruits that are extremely high in sugar include cherries, tangerines, mangoes, cherries, grapes, pomegranates, mangoes, figs, and bananas.

\"low Carb\"

Nuts and Seeds - Nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients and are great substitutes for more starchier foods like wheat. Flax seeds are extremely healthy and low in carbs. A combination of healthy fat, protein, and fiber make them appetizing to eat.

List of Low Carb Foods for Weight Loss

Dairy products - The amount of dairy you can eat will depend on how sensitive your body is to carbs. Some people can stomach more dairy than others. Milk contains a fair amount of sugar but is broken down over a longer period of time than other sugars. Many people tolerate milk well while others have serious intestinal problems when exposed to it. Don't blame me if you end up stuck on the toilet because you consumed too much milk. Milk does have some carbs in the form of lactose which is supposedly less glycemic than other sugars. Some good substitutes for milk are coconut milk, unsweetened soy milk or unsweetened almond milk. If you are sensitive to milk some other good dairy products where the whey is removed and have less sugar include strained yogurt, cottage cheese, and other cheeses. If you do not have a lot of dairy in your diet make sure you are getting adequate amounts of calcium.

Fats - Believe it or not, there are essential fats in foods that are vital to your overall health. Omega 3′s found in fish are great for you.

Legumes - Legumes such as beans, lentils, and peas have a lot carbs in them. However, these carbs are digested slowly and are excellent choices for people who don't process sugar well. FYI - canned beans are more glycemic than beans you cook yourself. Soy beans are lower in carbohydrates than other beans. Black soy beans are probably your best best because they don't have the bland taste of regular soy beans and they work well in most bean recipes.

Whole grains - While whole grains are often rich in carbs, there are good additions to a low carb diet. The starch is broken down into glucose more slowly than flour and refined grains. A serving of grains is about a half cup. Whole grain pasta should be cooked slightly firm as the more it is cooked the faster it is broken down. You will lose the nutritional value if you cook it for too long. Some good substitutes to pasta which are lower in carbs include spaghetti squash, shirataki noodles, and low carb pastas such as Dreamfields.

Foods you want to stay away from - sugary and starchy foods - aka. foods rapidly produced into glucose

- Foods with lots of sugars such as soft drinks and candies

- Fruit juices - Many fruit juices are packed with sugar. Here are some good guidelines when consuming fruit juices. 8 ounces a day of 100% juice is okay. However, keep in mind, that juices are usually high in calories. If you are really trying to lose weight, substitute the low sugar fruits as mentioned above for fruit juice.

- Foods with tons of flour - Foods such as cakes, cookies, and crackers, are packed with flour and have little nutritional benefit.

Not Losing Weight on Low Carb Diet? Cheating Will Help

Not losing weight on a low carb diet is frustrating for certain. You are restricting the number of carbohydrate grams daily and passing on all of your favorite foods and yet the scale is not showing any progress. Here are the three things you must do to make your low carb diet work including how cheating can help.

1. Count your actual carbohydrate grams. There are many hidden carbs in the foods you eat and you might be thinking you are eating fewer carbs than you actually are. Every body is different but if you are consuming more than 50 grams per day your body may have found a settling point and adapted to your low carb routine. Drop this number to 30 grams a day for a few days and see if the scale starts moving for you. Note 30 grams is not many carbs, count every one.

\"low Carb\"

2. Are you eating too much or too little? When low carb diets first became popular they came with the promise that you could eat as much as you want and still lose weight. But this promise has quietly faded away. You cannot eat anything you want but you can fill yourself up. If you are not losing weight on your low carb diet then you will want to start by cutting your portion sizes by one-fourth until your weight starts dropping. On the flip side, you might be eating too few calories and shutting down your fat burning potential.

Not Losing Weight on Low Carb Diet? Cheating Will Help

To know how many calories you should be eating, Google the words "Calorie Calculator". This will give you a cool little tool that calculates your daily caloric need according to your age, height and current weight and activity level.

3. CHEAT! When you have made sure that tips 1 and 2 above are working for you the best thing you can do to jump start your losing is to schedule a weekly "Cheat Day". This is not some "sounds good but doesn't work" scheme, cheating is actually shown in research and real life examples to work.

Here is why cheating will help...

When you are dieting your body's metabolism slows, this is the last thing you want when your goal is to lose weight. But you can keep your metabolism humming right along while you diet by scheduling 6 diet days followed by one cheat day. This one cheat day will have carbohydrates allowed, in fact any of your favorite foods will be allowed: pizza, ice cream, bread...

Now you will notice your cheat day will cause your body to retain water but this water weight is quickly lost and you benefit from a metabolism that is efficiently burning fat for you all week long. Joel Marion is one of the leading hands-on people showing how this cheat method works and he teaches a program called Cheat Your Way Thin which shows exactly how to make this work.

So if you are not losing weight on low carb dieting try these tips: count your actual carbohydrate grams, find your daily caloric needs and stick to them and add a "Cheat Day" to your low carb week. These tips should get your scale moving down.

Net Carbohydrates - Useful Or Useless?

Over the past decade the popularity of very low carbohydrate diets has increased A LOT. As a result the food industry has tried to cash in on this movement by providing people with low carb versions of foods that naturally aren't low carb.

For the most part I think that they have failed miserably as 'low carb' products are generally gross or loaded with sugar alcohols and other 'non impact' carbs that while they may not spike insulin they do mess with your digestion.

\"Low Carb Protein Bars\"

If you have eaten so seen any artificially low carb protein bars (these are the worst!) then you will have come across the 'net carbs' verbage. The classifications of 'net carbs' was originally penned by the Aktins people (which if you didn't know are essentially now a supplement company and uses the Atkins book as a marketing tool).

Net Carbohydrates - Useful Or Useless?

'Net carbs' are basically all the carbs in a given food that will impact your blood sugar. Processed low carb foods are stuffed with sugar alcohols (malitol, lactitol, and xylitol) to replace the sweetness void left from removing sugar (sugar free chocolate anyone?). These sugars are not easily digested (if at all) and thus will not impact your blood sugar like normal sugar. The 'net carb' classification allows for these sugars (usually along with glycerine) to not be counted. So if a protein bar has 35 grams of carb but 15 of those are malitol and glycerine then the package will read "Now with only 20grams net carbs".

Why do you care?

Avoid these foods. First, sugar alcohols are not tolerated well by most and you'll end up with a nasty bout of diarrhea (Note: many sugar free gums are sweetened with xylitol. The amount in the gum is negligible so you don't have to worry about it). Second, foods containing sugar alcohols are processed to the MAX. The Naked Nutrition approach is all about creating a healthy eating pattern in which the byproduct is the body you desire (pretty good byproduct huh?).

As a general rule skip the products that advertise 'net carbs'.

But pass up the honey roasted ones and the pretzels.

As for the meals, veggies are fine as is any meat, but ditch the bread. Bring along some cheese or other easy-to-carry protein foods that security won't get upset about.

As far as eating a low carb dessert on a flight, there are some great-tasting low carb protein bars that should do nicely, or bring along some sugar-free chocolate or other sugarless candies or gum.

Another trick is to eat a large meal before boarding, either at home or in one of the restaurants found in most airports. That could, of course, be a bit more expensive and you might be taking off or landing at odd hours when most places are closed.

Fast food stops when you are driving or taking the bus can be OK as long as you watch yourself. Getting hamburgers and throwing away the bun, or fried chicken and tossing the encrusted skin works well. Many fast food places now have salads, which is a good choice if they have a bleu cheese dressing or other low-carb option. No bread, no fries and things should go OK. Stick with unbreaded chicken and fish dishes.

Again, take a cooler with low carb desserts and other foods. Most hotel rooms have little refrigerators in the room, or you can have housekeeping bring one up for you. Not only will this help you stay on your diet, you can save money by eating your safe food for a few meals and then splurge on good restaurants in places to which you may never return.

Luckily, it's fairly easy to eat low carb in most places, and many restaurants even has a low-carb section on their menus. Or course, going to a fine steakhouse is JACKPOT to low carbers, other than afterwards.

Sadly, few places have low carb desserts. However, kudos to The Cheesecake Factory which makes a delicious low carb cheesecake, so if there is one of these restaurants in the place you are visiting, swing buy and get a slice.... or two!

Finally, if you MUST splurge and sample the native desserts, do it all at once and get it over with. If you're going to go off your diet, try to restrict the time and number of meals. Sometimes, you can have a "diet free day" and go hog wild.

Keep this in mind though: You don't want to feel sluggish and bad and mad at yourself when you are headed for a business meeting or out to see the local sights. Try to stay strong.

But if you do give in to temptation, just don't feel so guilty and simply give up - get back on the diet track as quickly as possible and quickly resume enjoying your protein and low carb desserts!

What's the Difference Between Carbs and Protein?

What's the difference between carbohydrates and protein? Which is better for you? Should you cut carbs from your diet? I'm going to answer all of those questions for you right now.

First off, carbohydrates and protein and two very vital nutrients when it comes to your body's health. They help you gain and maintain muscle mass and strong bones. You need both, period.

\"low Carb Protein\"

Protein: This is the nutrient your body uses as a main ingredient in building muscle. Protein plays a vital role in bone strength and maintenance and even helps with healthier skin and hair. You can find protein in the following foods: beans, peanuts, turkey, chicken, eggs, and milk.

What's the Difference Between Carbs and Protein?

Carbs: Carbohydrates are what your body uses for immediate fuel for energy. When you exercise, your body pulls these to help get you through your workout. Don't let this fool you-- you also need carbs for your daily routine. Carbs play a HUGE role in kidney, brain, and heart function. You can find carbs in the following foods: rice, pasta, bread, and whole grain foods.

What about those fad diets? Cut this, lower the intake of that, stop eating this, eat more of this, eat only this. It can get confusing. That's why they're called fad diets. These diets are created just for public consumption to help push a product, book, or service. These diets can provide short term results but you should never ever use these as a long-term solution. Depriving your body of vital nutrients for a long period can be detrimental to your health.

Why are carbs often associated with weight gain? Well, usually because they are contained in foods that are high-calorie. The truth is that the calories are the culprit for the weight gain associated with these foods, not the carbs themselves.

The bottom line is: If you burn more calories than you eat each day, you will lose weight. It IS that simple. Don't let anyone tell you differently. This is why exercise and nutrition go importantly hand-in-hand.

Candida Food - Low Carb Protein Bars' Eating Risk

Talking about candida food, my friend discovered a plethora of low carb protein bars on a recent visit home to the US (from Canada), coming in at 1-3 grams of carbs. One is Metabolift from Twinlab while the other is Ultimage LoCarb from Biochem. Her plan is to keep them on hand to help curb her after dinner sweet tooth. And she said that they actually taste sort of good!

They are generally full of other junk stuff like whole wheat flour palm kernel oils, milk powder, traces of peanuts. However, she is thinking that all of the ingredients that are coming in at a low carb count must be way better than the chocolate ice cream. She craves on a daily basis and has occasionally given in to.

\"low Carb Protein\"

However, I believe to take it from the hypoglycemic, glycerin, sorbitol, and malitol are not negligible on blood sugar/insulin levels if you are hypoglycemic or diabetic especially. Be careful if you are like me, who can only have Stevia as a sweetener. Everything else makes me hypo. Glycerin is another form of sugar, and the other two are derived from alcohol.

Candida Food - Low Carb Protein Bars' Eating Risk

If you crave a sweet, especially ice cream, try Rice Dream by Imagine Foods. You can find it at most health food stores. They have varying flavors. The best for us candida sufferers is the Carob, Carob Almond, and the vanilla. They are good and have not affected my hypo either. It takes some getting used to, and don't expect it to taste like ice cream. It is still good, anyway.

A Guide To Low Carb Food

When looking for a low carb food list, it is best not to lump all carbs together. It is far better to list the 'good' carbs and the 'bad' carbs separately. Good carbs do not cause the sudden rise in blood sugar levels that bad carbs do. These complex carbohydrates will make you feel fuller for longer and less likely to have an energy high followed by a rapid energy low.

Foods included in the low carb food list will mainly be complex carbohydrates or good carbs. Good carbs are those foods which are unrefined and close to their natural state. Bad carbs or simple carbohydrates are those foods which have been very refined such as white bread, sugary foods, white rice and pasta. Of course there are some foods which fall somewhere in the middle.

\"low Carb Protein\"

When using this type of diet to lose weight, the bulk of your foods should be in the form of non starchy vegetables and salad greens. Non-starchy vegetables are low in calories while containing a wealth of nutrients such as antioxidants and fibre. The following low carb food list of vegetables are considered a very good low carb choice: alfalfa sprouts, artichokes, asparagus, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bell peppers, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chard, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, kale, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, radishes, snow peas, spinach, summer squash, tomato and zucchini. Non starchy vegetables such as these also help as an appetite suppressant as they fill you up for longer.

A Guide To Low Carb Food

Fruit consumption needs to be limited as some fruits contain quite high levels of simple carbohydrates or bad carbs. Fruits which contain the lowest carb count include: apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, grapefruit, guava, peaches, raspberries, rhubarb and strawberries. Depending on the type of low-carb diet you decide on, some of these fruits may not be suggested. You should therefore check with the diet you have selected before choosing your foods.

All meats are low in carbs apart from offal or organ meats such as liver. Animal products are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Red meat is low carb, which includes, beef, pork and lamb. Eggs, seafood and poultry are low carb as long as no other carbs are added in the cooking process. As these foods are all protein based they are a vital part of a low-carb diet. Processed meats such as sausages, hot dogs and ham may contain added carbohydrates and so should be avoided or only be eaten occasionally.

One food ingredient that does need to be limited due to it's sugar content is milk. Since many people suffer with lactose intolerance, substituting cows milk with soya milk is a good alternative as it is lower in sugars than cows milk. Cheese however, and some other dairy products are allowed such as butter. Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein in the diet and very useful if on this type of diet. Eggs in particular top the list of high protein foods for this type of diet. They make a quick breakfast, lunch or dinner and are very versatile.

Foods made from soybeans are also low in carbohydrates. Soy foods are high in phytoestrogens, a naturally occurring estrogen. They are also rich in plant based protein, calcium and vitamins A and D. As well as substituting milk with soya, foods such as tofu, tempeh and soya ice cream are all good to use. You should make sure the product you are buying is unsweetened as this can add to the carb value.

And finally on the food list is fats. To be able to eat fats while on a weight loss diet seems to contradict all previous advice. Fats are carb free, but if using fats be sure to use the healthy, unsaturated variety. Unsaturated fats include the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated varieties. These fats contain antioxidants that can help the body work more efficiently. Choose plant-based fats such as canola, sunflower, olive and peanut oils.

Protein Low Carb Shakes - Get Ripped Muscles

On the Internet, you often see ads about 6 pack abs and ripped muscles. Everyone wants the visual appearance of a fitness model. But do you know that it takes a fair amount of time and work before you can achieve that?

To get a ripped body, there are really two goals that you want to achieve. The first goal is that you want bigger muscles. Bigger muscles are more visible and more visually appealing. The second goal is to ensure that the muscles are visible. For the average person, muscles are covered under a layer of fat. That layer of fat has to be removed so that muscles can appear ripped.

\"low Carb Protein\"

That's why fitness models and bodybuilders talk a lot about body fat percentage. The goal here is not to lose weight. In fact, as you acquire more lean muscle mass, you become heavier because muscle is heavier than fat. But gaining weight shouldn't bother you too much because your main aim is to improve your health, strength and physical appearance.

Protein Low Carb Shakes - Get Ripped Muscles

The average male has about 17 to 20% fat. Female has slightly higher than that. If you want a ripped body, you have to at least achieve a body fat percentage of about 10 to 12%. Professional bodybuilders can bring their body fat percentage to as low as 4 to 5%. But that is usually unnecessary for most fitness enthusiasts.

To lower the body fat percentage, you have to eat clean. Eating clean means that anything that can be easily converted to fat should be eliminated from your diet. For example, during the cutting phase, avoid anything with sugar and high carb in them.

That's why bodybuilders like to consume low carb protein shakes when cutting. Be sure to read the nutritional labels before making a purchase. Low carb shakes can help you get ripped quicker.

High School Wrestling: Diet and Weight Loss Options

As wrestling season draws near, wrestlers begin to contemplate the weight class in which they may wrestle. Wrestlers often believe that they will be more competitive at the lowest weight they can reach without sacrificing their strength and endurance. This isn't always the case. Too often, wrestlers end up dehydrated. They end up starving themselves and their performance suffers greatly.

If you're looking for an article on cutting weight, this isn't it. If you're the kind of wrestler who can lose ten pounds in wrestling practice, this article may not interest you either. I could never sweat off a lot of weight, so I was always more interested in manipulating my diet to lose weight. There are, of course, a myriad of diets to choose from. I simply want to discuss ten diets of which I am familiar. Maybe one of them will interest you and you can research it further. Let's explore.

\"low Carb Protein\"

1. Low Carb/High Protein Diet

High School Wrestling: Diet and Weight Loss Options

The Atkins Diet is probably the most famous low carb diet. So, what exactly is a low carb diet? A low carb diet limits carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, cereals, grains, potatoes and other starchy vegetables, fruit, and sometimes even milk.

The theory is that carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels which in turn raise insulin levels. Spiking insulin levels is considered bad because the idea is that insulin tells the body to store carbohydrates as body fat and prevents the body from accessing body fat as a fuel source. Supposedly, if you follow a low carb diet plan you can lose excess body fat without having to drastically limit your food intake.

Some low carb diets focus on limiting carbohydrates while increasing one's intake of fat and protein.

Some low carb diets focus more on the glycemic index. The glycemic index essentially measures how much a given food raises one's blood sugar levels. For instance, white rice may have a glycemic index of 58 while broccoli may only have a glycemic index of 15. White bread may have a glycemic index as high as 71. The idea is that a diet composed of low glycemic foods will lead to lower insulin levels which in turn may help one lose weight.

Patrick Holford takes the glycemic index one step further and uses a concept called the glycemic load. The glycemic load takes into account the glycemic index as well as the total carbs in a given amount of food. For instance, a bowl of steel-cut oats (1 oz.) has 2 GL while a bowl of corn flakes has 21 GL. In addition, half an apple has 3 GL while a banana has 12 GL. That is quite a difference. Holford is a big fan of oats. He claims in his book The Holford Low GL Diet, "There are specific foods and food combinations that cause rapid weight loss." He claims that you will never feel hungry on his diet. You limit the number of GLs you eat in a day and you combine carbs and protein at each meal.

Tim Ferriss champions a diet he refers to as the Slow-Carb Diet. On this regimen one avoids carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereals, grains, potatoes, etc. Then simply choose one protein, one legume, and one vegetable for each meal. For example, breakfast might be scrambled eggs, black beans, and mixed vegetables. Lunch might be beef, pinto beans, and mixed vegetables. And, dinner might be chicken breast, lentils, and asparagus. Eat as much as you want at each meal and eat up to six times a day. But, always avoid carbs and dairy products and always include a protein, legume, and vegetable.

Some low carb diet books include Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Protein Power, The Zone Diet, The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, The South Beach Diet, The Greenwich Diet, The No-Grain Diet, and Sugar Busters.

I suppose the main attraction of low carb diets is that one can burn fat and spare muscle while not having to restrict the amount one eats drastically. On the other hand, low carb diets can make one fatigued and irritable until one gets used to the low carb regimen. Keep in mind that there are several different versions of low carb diets.

2. Paleolithic Diet (Paleo Diet)

The Paleolithic (Paleo) diet seeks to replicate what humans ate during the Paleolithic Era. This diet may also be referred to as the Stone Age Diet, Cave Man Diet, or Hunter-Gatherer Diet. The Paleo diet is purported to promote weight loss as well as provide high fiber, protein, and omega-3 fats.

Foods You Can Eat:

  • Lean Meat (skinless chicken breast, turkey, cuts of lean beef like sirloin and extra-lean hamburger, cuts of lean pork, seafood)
  • Eggs
  • Fruits including berries
  • Vegetables including root vegetables like carrots
  • Nuts such as walnuts, macadamia, almonds, pecans, and pistachios
  • Seeds such as pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds
  • Olive oil, flaxseed oil, nut oils, fish oil, canola oil, and avocado

Foods To Avoid:

  • Grains
  • Pasta
  • Bread
  • Cereals
  • Potatoes
  • Sugar
  • Beans
  • Dairy Products

The Paleo diet may seem similar to the low carb diet and it is in some ways. For instance, it doesn't allow grain products. However, the Paleo Diet does allow fruits. In addition, it makes a distinction between lean meat and fatty meat which I think is beneficial. Moreover, cheese can be eaten on a low carb diet but dairy is not allowed on the Paleo Diet because it would not have been a food consumed during the Paleolithic era.

I like the Paleo Diet because it provides fiber, protein, and healthy fats.

3. Anabolic Diet

The Anabolic Diet was developed by Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale. He developed this diet primarily for bodybuilders looking for an alternative to steroids and other drugs. He states, "The Anabolic Diet maximizes the production and utilization of the Big 3 growth producers - testosterone, growth hormone, and insulin - and does it naturally. It also shifts the body's metabolism from that of a sugar burning, fat producing machine to that of a fat burning machine." The Anabolic Diet is a high fat/high protein/low carb diet with a twist. The Anabolic Diet employs a method called carb cycling. For example, you eat a high fat/high protein/low carb diet for five days followed by a high carb diet for two days.

A more generic term for this diet would be cyclic ketogenic diet or simply carb cycling. The idea is that you must eat fat to burn fat. You can find specific guidelines about what to eat on low carb versus high carb days online.

So, it's not as strict as a low carb diet because you can carb up for a day or two. You still need to watch the total amount of calories that you consume because you're not a bodybuilder trying to gain weight, you're a wrestler trying to stay lean or even lose weight.

I've never tried this diet before and have no idea how it would work for a wrestler. I suppose, in theory, that one could eat low carb during the week and carb up on Saturday when tournaments are usually held. On the other hand, eating a lot of fat seems like a strange idea to most of us. If this diet interests you, I would suggest doing an internet search for anabolic diet or cyclic ketogenic diet to learn more.

4. Intermittent Fasting (IF)

This is a way of eating of that involves cycling periods of fasting (i.e. not eating) and eating. You can fast for 24 hours once or twice a week. The idea is that fasting twice a week reduces the total number of calories one takes in during any given week. For instance, you may have dinner at 6:00 pm one evening and not eat again until 6:00 pm the following evening. If you normally consume three meals a day, then you would simply skip breakfast and lunch two days a week but still have dinner on those days. Sure you might get a bit hungry, but it's only 24 hours and you'll only do it about twice a week. You never technically have to go a day without eating. If you eat at 6:00 pm on Monday, you can still eat on Tuesday; you just have to wait until 6:00 pm again. A good book on the subject of IF is Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon.

A somewhat similar fasting routine is called The Warrior Diet created by Ori Hofmekler. On this regimen, you eat one main meal at night and you have the option of eating a small amount of food during the day. You follow this routine every day. You can eat some fruits and vegetables during the day. You can also eat small amounts of lean meats and eggs or a low-carb protein shake. You eat no grains or starches during the day. At your main evening meal, you can consume essentially anything you want but in a certain order. You eat vegetables first, then protein, and then if you're still hungry you can eat some carbohydrates.

While using the intermittent fasting method, you still want to eat healthy. While you can basically eat what you want when not fasting, you still want to eat fruits and vegetables and healthy sources of protein and carbohydrates. You can eat other foods too (e.g. a dessert) but don't use your non-fasting period as an excuse to binge on junk food.

5. Body for Life

Bodybuilder and entrepreneur Bill Phillips was the founder of Muscle Media 2000 magazine and later acquired the ESA supplement company. He is perhaps most known for authoring the book Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength. In this book he outlines a workout strategy and dietary strategy to transform one's body.

The dietary strategy involves eating six small meals a day which is believed to promote stable blood sugar and insulin levels. Small meals are also believed to be easier to digest and assimilate than three larger meals.

What can you eat for each small meal? You can eat a portion of protein and a portion of carbohydrate. You are also encouraged to eat a serving of vegetables with some meals. A portion is about the size of the palm of your hand or your clenched fist. A potato the size of your clenched fist is a portion as is an apple. Two slices of whole wheat bread is a portion. A skinless chicken breast the size of your palm is a portion. You can also use MRP (meal replacement products) shakes and nutrition bars like Myoplex, Met-Rx, Meso-Tech, Muscle Meals, etc. that provide protein, carbs, and other nutrients all in one bar or shake.

Possible Meal Ideas:

  • One omelet and two slices of whole-wheat toast
  • Egg whites and oatmeal
  • Pancakes made with egg whites, oatmeal, protein powder, and fat-free yogurt
  • Combine one portion of low-fat cottage cheese and one portion of fat-free, sugar-free yogurt
  • One serving of chocolate MRP shake
  • Turkey burger on a whole-wheat bun
  • Chicken breast, steamed brown rice, and broccoli
  • Grilled sirloin steak, potato, mixed vegetables
  • One MRP nutrition bar

You are also encouraged to drink 10 glasses of water a day. You can consume one tablespoon of healthy fat a day such as olive, safflower, canola, sunflower, or flax seed oil. You can also consume small amounts of natural peanut butter and avocado.

You are encouraged to take one day off a week and eat whatever you want.

This plan is nice because you don't have to count calories and you probably won't get hungry eating six small meals a day. It may be hard to follow if you have a busy schedule.

6. Fit for Life

When Harvey Diamond co-authored Fit for Life, he helped bring the concept of natural hygiene into the mainstream. This way of eating isn't just about how much you eat but also when and how you eat it. This regimen is based on the principle of proper food combining. The idea is that different foods are broken down differently by the body and therefore should be eaten separately. Harvey Diamond makes a distinction between live foods (high-water-content food like fresh fruits and vegetables) and dead food (e.g. processed foods).

The Guidelines:

  • Fruit is always eaten alone at least two to three hours away from any other food.
  • Never eat more than one concentrated food (i.e. protein or starch) per meal.
  • Never combine starches and proteins (e.g. cereal and milk, bread and cheese, pasta and ground beef, fish and rice).
  • You can combine protein with vegetables or starches and vegetables.
  • Fat (e.g. butter, olive oil) is considered neutral. However, don't combine fat with protein.
  • Eggs and dairy products are discouraged.
  • Meat is discouraged but should be eaten alone or with vegetables if consumed.

Meal Ideas:

  • Breakfast - Fruit is encouraged because it is the food with the highest water content and is considered to be the best food to consume. So, you could eat two or more oranges or two apples or two bananas or other fruits and fruit combinations. However, if you don't like fruit you could have scrambled eggs with tomato and broccoli (i.e. protein and vegetables) or toast with butter (i.e. starch and fat). But, do not have eggs and toast or cereal and milk.
  • Lunch - You could have a large vegetable salad with some olive oil and lemon. You could skip the olive oil on your salad and put some pieces of grilled chicken on it. You could have a vegetable salad and some bread sticks. You could have vegetable soup and some bread sticks. Alternatively, you could have avocado slices and other vegetables (e.g. tomatoes) between two slices of whole-grain bread. You could have a large baked potato with butter and vegetables (just be sure to steer clear of bacon bits, cheese, and chili).
  • Dinner - You could have fish (or chicken or beef), vegetables, and a vegetable salad. Or, you could have rice (or couscous or pasta) with vegetables, and a vegetable salad. Or, if you like potatoes, then you could have a big baked potato with butter and vegetables.
  • If you want milk, yogurt, or ice cream then eat it alone at least two or three hours away from other food.
  • If you want fruit for a bedtime snack, then eat it alone at least two or three hours after dinner.

The motivational speaker and self-help guru Tony Robbins is an advocate of food combining. I've never tried it before. The good thing is that it focuses a lot on fruit and vegetables. In addition, your calories may be limited (helping with weight loss) when you can't combine starches and proteins, but at least you can still consume them if you choose.

7. High Carb/Low Fat Diet

Some doctors and nutritionists recommend a high card/low fat diet to lose weight and stay healthy - the exact opposite of the low carb advocates. Some names associated with low fat diets include Walter Kempner, Nathan Pritikin, Dean Ornish, and John McDougall. According to Dr. McDougall, his diet is "a diet of plant foods, including whole grains and whole grain products (such as pasta, tortillas, and whole-grain bread), a wide assortment of vegetables, and fruit."

The advocates of these diets claim that a person can enjoy unlimited quantities of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains without feeling hungry. These diets contain less fat and more fiber than other diets.

According to Dr. McDougall, "Carbohydrate is the body's preferred fuel for daily activities and high-intensity exercise performance. Following a low-carbohydrate regime will impair performance."

A baked potato is only about 160 calories and essentially fat free. An apple is only about 100 calories and also essentially fat free. A slice of whole wheat bread is only about 75 calories and essentially fat free. A bowl of oatmeal is about 165 calories, 4 grams of fat, and 4 grams of fiber.

In contrast, a 3 oz. patty of 85% lean ground beef (broiled) is about 213 calories and 13 grams of fat. And, a McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese is about 510 calories and 26 grams of fat. Moreover, a Snicker's Bar is about 270 calories and 14 grams of fat.

I'm not sure why everyone is so worried about cereals, potatoes, fruits, and breads. You can eat a lot of those foods for few calories if you don't add condiments.

Martin Katahn, author of The T-Factor Diet, believes that it is mainly fat in your diet that determines your body fat. He contends that protein and carbohydrate calories don't really matter that much. So, his approach is to count the fat grams in the food one eats and to keep the number low. He does, however, warn people to steer clear of highly processed fat-free desserts and snacks. Get your carbohydrates from fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains. In addition, eat lean meat, chicken, and fish.

8. Satiety Index

The Satiety Index (developed by Susanna Holt, PhD.) measures the extent to which certain foods provide satiety (i.e. fill you up and satisfy your hunger). Certain foods are simply better at filling you up than others.

For the most part, foods that are high in protein, water, and fiber provide the most satiety.

Carbohydrates are also better at producing satiety than fatty foods.

All foods on the index are compared with white bread which is given the rank of 100.

Some Satiety Food Rankings:

  • Croissant - 47%
  • Doughnuts - 68%
  • Yogurt - 88%
  • Corn Flakes - 118%
  • White Rice - 138%
  • Cheese - 146%
  • Eggs - 150%
  • Whole Meal Bread - 157%
  • Beef - 176%
  • Popcorn - 154%
  • Apples - 197%
  • Oranges - 202%
  • Oatmeal - 209%
  • Potatoes, Boiled - 323%

As you can see, potatoes provide a much higher level of satiety than a croissant. Similarly, oatmeal is more satisfying than a doughnut. In addition, eggs are more satisfying than yogurt. Seemingly, a sandwich made with whole meal bread with some lean beef or tuna along with an apple could make a satisfying and filling lunch.

A concept related to satiety is caloric density or energy density. Caloric density is the number of calories in a specific amount of food. Foods high in fat have the highest energy density while foods high in water content have the lowest energy density.

For instance, cucumbers, celery, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, grapefruit, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, carrots, oranges, and apples are very low in caloric density. Some other low caloric density foods include oatmeal, grapes, low-fat cottage cheese, peas, corn on the cob, potatoes, rice, and pasta.

In contrast, foods such as French fries, chocolate cake, pretzels, croissants, doughnuts, onion rings, chocolate chip cookies, bacon, milk chocolate bars, potato chips, and peanuts are much higher in caloric density. Even though pretzels are essentially fat free, they are high in energy density because they lack water and fiber.

Fresh corn (e.g. steamed corn or corn on the cob) has a caloric density of 0.92. However, a corn muffin has a caloric density of 4.14 and corn bread has a caloric density of 4.27. So, choose a big bowl of steamed corn if you're hungry.

Some low-fat cottage cheese and grapes could make a satisfying and filling meal.

9. Food Exchange System

The food exchange system is a dietary regimen most commonly associated with diabetic individuals. However, the food exchange system can be used by any individual as a guide to help them lose weight. Following this regimen can help one to plan balanced and nutritious meals.

The foods in this system are divided up into categories: starches (e.g. bread, cereals and grains, starchy vegetables, beans and peas), fruits, milk and yogurt, meat and meat substitutes, vegetables, and fats.

You need to know what constitutes a serving size. For instance, a serving of starch could be ¾ cup of ready-to-eat unsweetened cereal, 1 slice of bread, or ½ a bagel. A serving of fruit may be one small apple, banana, or orange. A serving of milk may be 1 cup of fat-free skim milk. A serving of meat may be 1 ounce of meat, poultry, fish, or cheese. A serving of vegetables may be ½ cup of cooked vegetables or 1 cup of raw vegetables. A serving of fats may be 1 tsp. of butter or 1 tsp. of olive oil. These are just a few of the examples. There are also free foods like 1 tbsp. of fat-free mayonnaise or ¼ cup of salsa. In addition, there are ways of determining exchanges for sweets and combination foods (e.g. casseroles, pizza, and soups).

For a 1,200 Calorie Meal Plan You May Eat:

  • 5 Starches
  • 2 Fruits
  • 2 Milks
  • 5 Meats
  • 3 Vegetables
  • 4 Fats

So, you might have a breakfast that contains 1 starch, 1 fruit, 1 milk, and 1 fat. Then you would divide the remainder of your exchanges amongst lunch, dinner, and possibly snacks. Some people find this easier than counting calories.

A somewhat similar regimen may involve using the original USDA Food Pyramid as a guide for eating. According to Jane Kirby (a registered dietitian) and the American Dietetic Association, one can use the food pyramid to plan a weight-loss diet.

A Possible 1,200 Calorie Meal Plan:

  • 5 Bread group servings
  • 3 Vegetable group servings
  • 2 Fruit group servings
  • 2 Milk group servings
  • 5 ounces total for a day for Meat group (divide up into 2 or 3 servings if you want from lean meats or eggs)

10. Counting Calories

Calorie counting is nothing new.

A Los Angeles physician named Dr. Lulu Hunt Peters published a book entitled Diet and Health, With a Key to the Calories in 1918. She recommended consuming no more than 1,200 calories per day, with somewhat more allowed after one's goal weight was reached.

Calories in Carbohydrate, Protein, and Fat:

  • Carbohydrate = 4 calories per gram
  • Protein = 4 calories per gram
  • Fat = 9 calories per gram

Keep in mind that 3,500 calories = 1 pound of fat. Therefore if you cut 500 calories a day from your diet, you'll lose approximately one pound a week (7 days x 500 calories = 3,500 calories).

A simple formula for losing weight is to take your current bodyweight times 10 and eat that number of calories daily to lose weight. For example, a wrestler who weighs 150 pounds would eat 1,500 calories daily (150 x 10 = 1,500). To maintain your weight, take your bodyweight times 15. A 125 pound wrestler wishing to maintain his weight would eat 1,875 calories daily (125 x 15 = 1,875).

Calorie counting is becoming popular again. For example, you may have noticed packages of 100-calorie snacks in the supermarket.

You can still find books listing calorie counts for common foods as well as restaurant foods. And, almost every food at the supermarket contains nutrition information including calories.

Calorie counting can be inconvenient. Individuals sometimes get hungry on a calorie-controlled diet. Nonetheless, calorie counting works for many people.

Final Words

The best advice I have to give is to simply wrestle at your natural weight. But, I know that many of will choose not to because you think you'll be more competitive at a lower weight. Some of you may have to cut weight to reach a certain body weight in order to make the team.

I used to eat a lot of oatmeal and other cereals, whole wheat bread, rice cakes, potatoes, apples, oranges, bananas, carrots, green beans, milk, yogurt, cheese, and lean meat during my high school wrestling career. I counted every calorie and limited my fat intake because that's what worked for me.

It's interesting to look back at what I ate. I ate a lot of oatmeal which is low on the glycemic load, low in caloric density (when cooked with water), relatively low in fat, and high on the satiety index. I didn't know all of that back when I was wrestling. I just knew that oatmeal was low in calories and provided a filling breakfast.

I also ate a lot of apples and green beans. These foods are low in calories and fat, but are high in water content and fiber. In addition, I ate a lot of potatoes which are very high on the satiety index.

You may be different.

Perhaps you're one of those guys that can lose 5 to 10 pounds of water weight in a practice. Or, perhaps you like meat and, therefore, a low carb diet would suit you better.

Even some of the greatest wrestlers can become disheartened with dieting and cutting weight. Three- time NCAA wrestling champion and Olympic silver medalist Barry Davis cracked once when faced with the strain of cutting weight. He almost missed the Big Ten Tournament in 1982 because of the pressure of cutting weight. Many other great wrestlers have had tough experiences cutting weight as well.

On the other hand, John Smith (two-time Olympic gold medalist and winner of multiple world championships) took a different approach to weight control. He disciplined himself to maintain year-round weight control (according to Wrestling Tough by Mike Chapman). Smith kept near his competition weight throughout the year.

Other wrestlers have had success by working hard and wrestling near their natural body weight and sometimes cutting no weight whatsoever.

If you decide to cut weight for wrestling, please don't starve and dehydrate yourself. It's unhealthy, dangerous, and will most likely hurt your performance. Try always to eat balanced and nutritious meals. If you decide to lose weight, figure out what works best for you.
